I had my fare share of dealing with tantrums and still have. Once I sat on a mall bench for almost 45minutes watching my daughter rolling on the floor screaming and kicking the floor, just because I said she can't touch something in the store. At the end I asked my son to ask her to play and she stopped. I know it's unbearable to watch them screaming and ignore them. I don't ignore but sit there with a firm face and say, this is not wrong but we can stay like this as long as you like. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Ignoring worked with one type of my son's tantrums. He used to cry and then stop breathing until he was purple, if he didn't get what he wanted. You can imagine how scary is watching that. Our family Dr. assured me he won't be suffering any brain damage for this and if I ignore him he will get out of this stage within 6months. It was hard, but the minute he started I would turn and not look at him directly, just made sure he was safe, it stopped in 4 months.
